The Christmas swell came in and ruled. Especially Christmas eve and the day before, when pine trees was going off 6-8 feet all day. Easily the largest waves I've ever consistently surfed. Things have died down and the clouds have moved back in, but there are some good rides here and there. |

Early in the trip it looked like some arctic ocean (eh), now the sun is coming out again as the surf builds back up. Could be too much too soon as it's scheduled to hit advisory levels by Christmas day. Today at pine trees it was a fun time in the crystal blue water aside from getting thrown repeatedly into the sand bar on every closeout. The bowl is looking good lately but shallow as hell. Cut open my hand on a rock when I tried to paddle out a few days ago. Rich claims he surfs the bowl every day. I'm not sure I believe that. Should be an interesting Christmas. |

met Brandon and Tom at the Boris show last night, had a blast at what was really a comedically bad performance. on the up side i got a sweet t-shirt out of it, on the down side the total expenses came in at around $70 plus or minus the $20 that I may have accidentally given a guy on the street. woops. a bar would've been a cheaper place to recount stories of reluctantly getting it on with homeless cutter girls in tokyo apartments with ceiling to floor pink shag carpeting, but a fun time was still had.

My withdrawal from "Cal" should be finalized within a few days, further insanity pending. Once the refund check is cleared I'm going to be really psyched to do something rewarding for the first time in 5 years.
And also LOL INTERNET. Ian, I'm bemused and genuinely saddened that you had to be subjected to the horror that is my MESSAGE BOARD.
Hiking log to follow. |

Made it through the week. Still not sure what to think of the whole scene here, but if there's one thing I do know it's that I like an excuse to get new furniture.

Can't move into a new place without a shaka neko. Mystical powers yet to be demonstrated
Glass by Kris. Nice work dude
 Handscape by me
 Bowl too
Finally an excuse to use the hotel chairs
The bedrooms in these places face each other which would be less amusing if the people across the way weren't always walking around in their underwear

Can't get a good view of San Francisco from the building but the golden gate and alcatraz are pretty clear
I miss San Jose, particularly the hot tub and the hills, and maybe Taco Bell, too. But so far it's pretty comfortable. Academia not so much. And along those lines...
One year anniversary of the battle of los angeles! Holy shit. I still need to write the road report for history's sake.
Also along those lines, Frank |

Got back from another stay in OB with Ian and the gang. I was really stoked for the trip and it turned out even better than anticipated. Drinking beer and bodysurfing at the beach was so great. Mandatory Nick GAS viewing and obsessive Devil's Crush high score rallies were also nice. Ian's birthday dinner at le fontainebleau was just out of control. I've been able to travel and experience some pretty amazing food, but the ridiculous atmosphere and sustained level of quality were unlike anything I'd seen before. We were all totally in the moment and once the wine started flowing the mood picked up exponentially. Nearly 3 hours of dining that I won't forget. I didn't realize until I got home what a relaxing trip it was. A much needed vacation. When I stop to think about it, I feel really glad to know some down to earth people that are cool enough to let me loaf around their house for a week. I really want to gather all my scattered peoples in the house in Kauai as a big catch-all thank you... which is sort of a backwards gift you have to pay big airfare to collect on, I guess. Should've asked the loud lady at le fontainebleau about the private jet she kept talking about. I'd totally invite the piano player along, too. |

| de-lux apartment in the sky |

Today I signed the lease for the apartment in Berkeley. Maybe I shouldn't make a journal post about it - my original 2006 Berkeley acceptance letter post > missed deadline, not enough credits to enroll. Berkeley Daft Punk post > enrollment scheduled for the same day as the show. Not a great streak of luck. I still feel completely out of place in Berkeley, but the apartment is so swank. My furniture will look so freaking awesome in it. The close proximity to San Francisco has me rather psyched. Driving back across the bay bridge I again realized how much I love the San Francisco aura. Time to watch Bullitt. |
